Copy editor, Borderlands

EMW Borderlands is the exciting about-to-launch online multimedia publication amplifying the voices of artists, storytellers and makers growing out of the EMW community. We are seeking copy editors to help us grow our publication into one of Boston’s premier platforms for marginalized communities to see themselves heard and reflected. As part of one of the most rapidly expanding operations at EMW, you will have a strong voice in defining the trajectory of our publication in our first year of operation.

 

THE BORDERLANDS MANIFESTO

Growing out of the EMW Bookstore community, Borderlands seeks to amplify the voices and visions of all artists, storytellers, and makers who challenge conceptual borders within ourselves and in the world. Rather than the mere reproduction of “what is expected” as demarcated by societal boxes, we dare to demand, “what is possible?” We call on all artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, designers, thinkers and scientists to travel with us to the borderlands of identity, genre and thought. This is where everything we are meets everything that is infinite. We are the rabble-rousers, the dangerous thinkers, the unapologetic visionaries. Somewhere beyond category and definition, there is a field. We will meet you there.

Borderlands has five sections: LIVES | BEATS | VISIONS | SALONS | WORDS

 
 
 
 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work in an editorial team to edit content for the Borderlands website

  • Fact check names, places, data, and organizations to ensure accuracy before publishing

  • Assist in creating page layouts, organize placement of articles and photographs, and coordinate with authors 


TYPE OF POSITION

  • 5-7 hours per week

  • Volunteer with a possibility of being a paid part-time position

    REQUIREMENT

    • Excellent written English, including good spelling and grammar; a meticulous approach to their work and an eye for detail
       
    • The ability to maintain high-quality work while meeting tight deadlines
       
    • Good concentration, to focus on texts that may be lengthy
       
    • Tactful approach when dealing with authors
       
    • The ability to retain the author's 'voice' after editing
       

    • Passion for working in a dynamic and quickly-growing team environment, belief in and desire to support our mission

    • A positive, can-do attitude, willingness to learn, and a high level of organization and energy
