Duy Doan’s poems are open to loss, temporary and permanent; loss that comes from violence (family and war), from love, from neglect. As a first-generation Vietnamese American queer poet from Texas, he also writes about losing his grasp of the Vietnamese language and customs, a loss that happens over time, across generations. He believes that loss can be redeemed through compassion and connection.
